MARLENE’S BIOGRAPHY

When I was 12 years old I asked my parents to let me work during the summer holidays, in a restaurant where my father derived meat. After this vacations my life was spent between school and that kitchen. At the age of 16 I enrolled in the hospitality school of Santa Maria da Feira.
I started by working in a charming hotel in Vila do Conde. After a year and a half I decided to pack my belongs and travel to New York where I worked in a Portuguese restaurant (Alfama) in Manhattan for two years. I returned to Portugal and worked in 5 star hotels and some restaurants. In 2009 I participated for the first time in the Chef Cook of the Year contest, where usually only men participated. “I’m a woman from the north” in a world that appears to be for men, but I believe i’m an inspiration to other women. I want to always do good cooking and also challenge society by showing that professional cooking is also a world of women where they can and do know, lead and create, as well or better than men!

I was born in Maia, near Oporto.

1992

At the age of 12, I went working in the summer for a restaurant for a young chef for who my father delivered meat. There i found that cooking was an addiction. I spent hours in the kitchen trying to make different dishes. I started cooking and it was only then that I started to eat.

1996

I went to the Hospitality School of Santa Maria da Feira. There was a teacher who had left the army and the classes looked like the forces, which was also in my head. I loved it, despite being very punished because i was something responsive.

I was considered the best student in the country and I got a scholarship to study at a school in Oporto.

2001

I went to work in Manhattan, NY, in the Portuguese restaurant Alfama.

I worked at the Degusto restaurant with chef Vitor Claro.

2007

I was the kitchen manager of the Westin Campo Real hotel between July 2007 and 2010.

I participated for the first time in the Chef Cook of the Year contest.

In May i opened Avenue, my first restaurant in Lisbon.

Opening of the Food Corner in Timeout Market.

I launch my catering project, with my own name.

In April I started the project Panorâmico by Marlene Vieira, in Oeiras.

CHEFS ACADEMY

Chef Marlene was one of the tutors in the culinary academy of RTP1, where during two seasons, teached the students her energy and demanding education. Despite being reputed in all areas, Marlene was famous for its pastry classes.
